So what are the reasons why your Porsche car overheats? Okay, guys, the first thing that you should look for when your Porsche overheats is your Radiator Cap.
Porsche overheating because the radiator cap is bad
People often thought of the radiator when overheating occurs. But that is not always the case and the radiator is often overlooked. So what does a radiator cap look like? Let me show you. Most of the time, the seals or rubber around the inner part of the radiator cap becomes bad and worn out. If this rubber becomes damaged and unusable, it won’t stand the pressure of the radiator.
That is the engine’s heat. And if that happens, it won’t keep the coolant from its natural path. So instead of circulating the system, the coolant goes back directly to the reservoir tank. Those car owners who have experienced overheating, often noticed that their reservoir tank is full after their Porsche car overheats.
That is because the coolant is not circulating properly inside the system. What a bad radiator cap does, is divert the coolant back to the reservoir. So you can replace your radiator cap if that is what you suspect is the problem. This cap is cheap and can be purchased at any local auto shop. The second reason why your car overheats and is also often overlooked is your Coolant Level.
Porsche Car overheating, check coolant level
If our car is brand new, we neglect to check our car’s coolant level. That is a wrong perception. Even if your car is brand new, you still need to check and maintain your coolant level, because coolant naturally evaporates and reduces over time. So if you noticed that your coolant level decreased, you need to add more coolant to your reservoir.
That is one of the reasons why your Porsche engine overheats. The third reason why your car overheats is the cooling system Leaks. How do you know if your system has leaks? Check your hoses and radiator fins. Leaks can be easy to spot especially if the coolant is dripping underneath your engine bay. Also, coolant is designed to have colors, making it easy for you to spot leaks.
So you must use coolant and not just water. Leaks aren’t just found on hoses, but also on the engine itself. And the most common cause of leaks is a damaged radiator. So as much as possible, avoid damaging your radiator to prevent leaks. And that is the fourth reason why your engine overheats.
Car overheating because of the bad radiator
Radiator issues aren’t just focused on leaks, they can also get clogged due to dirt and sediments. Some owners do use different coolant brands for their Porsche cars and don’t use the proper coolant for their engines. The results? Engine overheats and other car problems. These issues can lead to your radiator getting clogged.
And if that happens or it gets pierced and has leaks, it won’t easily be solved by using stop leaks products. Those aren’t that effective and the best way is to buy a new radiator for your car. So to avoid this, make sure that you only use the preferred coolant brand by your manufacturer. Okay, guys, the fifth reason why your engine overheats is the fan clutch.
Different engines have different fans. If you have rear-wheel drive, a truck, or SUV, then you will have a fan clutch. But if you have a front-wheel drive car, you will have a radiator fan instead of a fan clutch.
Later I will show you my Hyundai Accent which is a front-wheel drive car. Either the two, they both serve the same purpose, to cool down the temperature of your engine coolant which is passing through this radiator. Both fan clutch and radiator fan work the same way, to cool down coolant in the radiator as well as the engine.
This fan clutch is mechanical, which means that it is a stand-alone component and doesn’t depend on other car components. And if you start your engine, this fan clutch will turn on automatically. This fan provides cool air to the radiator and also to the engine as well. This is the reason why your Porsche engine’s temperature is stable and normal.
Now if your fan clutch is bad, it won’t provide enough air to your radiator. That is the cause of overheating. If your fan clutch is freewheeling, meaning there is no resistance anymore from the clutch, that means that it is lacking silicon oil inside. So if your Porsche car overheats, you have to check your fan clutch, if you have one.
What if you have a front wheel drive? Then let’s see my Hyundai Accent. The sixth reason why the car overheats is the radiator fan. So if your car has a fan clutch or radiator fan, check these fans first if your car overheats. Both of these fans have the same purpose as I said earlier. Just different in mechanisms.
Car overheating because of bad radiator fan
The fan clutch is mechanical and is directly connected to the engine. It will turn on when you start your engine. But in this Accent, which is a front-wheel drive, diesel engine. But it doesn’t have a fan clutch. It has a radiator fan. So that is the one that’s cooling your radiator. The car’s computer is the one that turns on this radiator fan.
Once your engine reached the right operating temperature, this fan will automatically turn on. What other people do, is connect their radiator fan directly to their battery. Don’t do that because it will drain your battery and will shorten the life of your radiator fan motor. So you also need to take good care of your thermo switch.
Thermo Switch is our seventh reason why cars overheat. So if your car has a radiator fan, it also has thermo switch which is responsible for turning the fan on. Again, when your engine reached its operating temperature, thermo switch will trigger the signal to turn on the radiator fan. So if you have a bad thermo switch, your radiator fan won’t work and it will lead to the overheating problem.
Okay. So if your Porsche car is a front-wheel drive, you have a radiator fan and not a fan clutch. Because of the engine design of front-wheel drive, their belts are at the side, so installing a fan clutch is not possible. And if you have rear-wheel drive, SUV or truck, the engine design is different. Their pulley, belts, etc.
Are facing the radiator. So remember this fact. If you have front-wheel drive, you have thermo switch and radiator fan. But if you have SUVs or rear-wheel drive engines, it doesn’t have thermo switch and radiator fan but have a fan clutch. Okay. Okay, guys, the 8th reason why your car is overheating is the thermostat.
The thermostat works by letting the cool coolant inside the engine block. Most of the coolant is seating inside the engine block. So when they become too hot, the thermostat will open releasing the hot coolant going to the radiator. It will also pave way for the cold coolant to enter the engine. And vice versa.
That is the process or cycle of the cooling system. Which helps maintain the right engine temperature. Here in this Montero Sports, the thermostat is situated at the end of the lower radiator hose. For example, in this upper radiator hose in some engines, the thermostat housing is placed at the end of this hose right where the coolant may enter the engine.
Some engines have their thermostat here. But in this Montero Sports, the thermostat can be found at the end of the radiator’s lower hose. Okay. Okay, guys, the ninth cause of engine overheating is the water pump. The water pump works by pumping water throughout the cooling system. It helps circulate the coolant in the entire system.
If you have a bad water pump, the water won’t be able to cool your engine temperature. Which leads to overheating. So why does the water pump goes bad over time? Sometimes it corrodes and gets rust from water and other chemicals that are not designed for your engine.
That exact pulley. Okay, when you remove the belt, you can pull out the water pump there. Okay. So when you checked all the components that I said here and still your Porsche car overheats, the most likely culprit is the water pump.
In every engine, you just have to look at your serpentine belt to locate your water pump. Because the water pump is one of the components that are tied to the serpentine belt. That also includes the alternator, compressor and power steering pump, and others. There are even engines that have super long belts so better not be confused and see your owner’s manual.
Okay. The last reason why your Porsche car overheats is your serpentine belt. If your belt is worn out, it will affect all these components that are tied with it to also fail.
If this belt is cracked or too loose already, it won’t run these components right. Such as your fan clutch, water pump, and many others. And it will lead to overheating. So if you noticed that your belt has cracks or is already bad, time to change it right away with your trusted mechanic. Okay, guys, those are the reasons why your Porsche car overheats.
So it is quite important for you guys, that you know the causes of overheating and troubleshoot your Porsche car. Now some people say that another cause of overheating is head gasket failure. But guys, a bad head gasket is already the consequence of engine overheating, not a cause. Once the oil and water mix, then your head gasket is already bad.
